On our own unimportance

Small in the scheme of things — and freer for it.

Whatever the nature of the whole does, and whatever serves to maintain it, is good for every part of nature.Gregory Hays translation · p. 18

We forget how truly unimportant we are — small in the context of the universe, the galaxy, the planet, a country, a city, a community, our friends, even our family. Our family may consider us important, but they will survive without us.

Once we remember this, we recapture our agency: we are a part of nature, and we can honor that greater importance by serving it and the common good.

It lets us see that the bad things that happen to us are insignificant — and can even be framed as good, if they serve nature.

Eventually we all return our minds and bodies to nature. Seen in that light, even death is good.
